As president of NIU, I have a front-row seat and a behind-the-scenes vantage point into the creativity, ingenuity and resolve that our students and scholars demonstrate as they bring new ideas, knowledge and possibilities to fruition. Their pursuits are as remarkable as the individuals behind them—driven by passion, purpose and innovation.
This issue of Northern Now offers impactful glimpses into how Huskies are meaningfully shaping the future of medicine, technology, sustainability, education, artistry and more. Their work is transforming communities, industries and lives—both near and far. It’s a powerful reminder that the Huskie spirit knows no bounds.
As a research university, our work produces new insights and trains the next generation of scholars and scientists. The research and artistic enterprises provide hands-on experiences to students, fostering their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills while promoting deep learning. This time-tested formula for engaged learning contributes in no small measure to the success of NIU, which in 2024 was recognized by both the Wall Street Journal and CollegeNET as a leading institution for social mobility—helping students climb the socioeconomic ladder.
Underpinning all the knowledge creation and progress happening at NIU is an unwavering commitment to our core values of curiosity and creativity; equity and inclusion; ethics and integrity; and service and stewardship.
As a nation, we are navigating seismic shifts in economics, culture, education, politics and technology. Yet, in this time of rapid change and widespread uncertainty, our legacy and our future must remain deeply rooted in service, collaboration, inclusive excellence, academic freedom and our commitment to matching talent with opportunity.
Together Forward,
Lisa C. Freeman
President
Northern Illinois University
