NIU President Lisa C. Freeman

Dear Huskies,

Every day at Northern Illinois University, I see the power of progress in action. It lives in our classrooms, our research labs and our communities, where Huskies come together to create knowledge, spark innovation and make a lasting difference. This issue of Northern Now celebrates the many ways our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are moving NIU forward with purpose.

From the Great Plains to global waterways, our researchers are asking bold questions and seeking solutions that make a difference. They are chasing hailstorms, mapping microplastics, advancing literacy for children who are blind and transforming dementia care through the healing power of music. Their work embodies the curiosity and compassion that define NIU.

We also celebrate the generosity and commitments that fuel this momentum. The launch of FORWARD: The Campaign for NIU, a $300 million effort to empower students, support faculty innovation and strengthen communities, represents a historic investment in our shared future. Together, we are expanding opportunity and ensuring that higher education remains a powerful force for equity and transformation.

As you read these stories, I hope you see your own connection to this extraordinary momentum. You are part of a community that believes in education’s power to change lives and in NIU’s lasting role as a beacon of opportunity and progress.

Thank you for your partnership and pride in NIU as we continue to move forward with purpose, with passion and with the unwavering belief that our greatest impact is still ahead.

Together Forward,

Lisa C. Freeman, D.V.M., Ph.D.
